What Are The Top Menswear Designers Up To

After years of being placed on the sidelines of fashion, contemporary Indian menswear is finally getting the attention it deserves. With designers from Bangalore to Delhi creating collections which cater to the sartorial needs of men in a big way, here are three designers who are bringing Indian menswear to global attention.

Troy Costa

When describing fashion designer Troy Costa, subtlety is the word du jour, because here is a man who takes understatement to an entirely new level. His designs focus on modern masculinity and flattering functionality, each piece is perfectly tailored using fine fabrics which flatter the body. Unlike other Indian designers, his use of colour is muted, concentrating more on beige, white, light browns and khaki’s. His latest collections have a very South American feel, with numerous blazer and summer suit designs, along with sensuous shirts and trousers; perfect for the man about town.

Narendra Kumar

The Narendra Kumar label is synonymous with a refreshing style that epitomizes India the new, creating menswear collections that intricately mixes the traditional flavours of bright colours, artistic sequins and beautiful materials, with the ultra modern sensations of everyday wear, international tailoring and fine cuts. As a menswear designer, Kumar has emerged as a wunderkind; this year alone he has already been featured in Esquire magazine, the first Indian designer to do so. With blazers of deep red, featuring black piping and purple shaded shirts and trousers, which are complimented by silver grey jackets, Kumar can do no wrong, when it comes to creating designs that can be worn anywhere in the world.

Ashish Soni

As a designer, Ashish Soni is unlike any other in the business. A former science student, Soni does not get his inspirations from art or nature, but from the scientific field of biology. Although previously focusing on womenswear, over the last few years, he has launched several men’s capsule collections. His most recent are myriad of pastel shades, from powder blue to subtle lilac; the entire collection has the feel of the Cosmopolitan dandy, with slim line fits and quality stitching. Soni mixes together his Bohemian approach to design with a very unique and scientific approach to colour.
