From 80s With Love : Mithun

This month the twinkle-toed master of disco dance and actor extraordinaire Mithun Chakraborty celebrated his birthday, and in honour of that we’ve unearthed some vintage postcards from his golden era. Here are some 80’s fashions, along with some interesting facts about Mithun.

// You don’t normally think of entertainment being associated with Soviet Union. Well back in his hey-day Mithun was one of the most popular Bollywood imports, his face was known from Moscow to Siberia, as king of the disco dance.

// Mithun has appeared in 350 films spanning nearly five decades. As well as Bollywood and TV, he’s worked on numerous Bengali, Bhojpuri and Oriya film, his most successful of course being 1982’s Disco Dancer.

// Dance India Dance, which Mithun is the Grandmaster has already entered the record books, including the Limca Book of Records and the Guinness World Records. Quite an achievement for a show which some critics panned.

// Did you know that our man Mithun has been immortalised as a comic book character called Jimmy Zhingchak? Written by Saurav Mohapatra and illustrated by Anupam Sinha, this was a one-shot comic which saw Mithun as the agent of D.I.S.C.O….not very obvious was it. It was a sparkling tongue-in-cheek parody to Bollywood’s love affair with disco in the 80’s.
